【老外说】国外也有双十一吗？

一年一度的“双十一”又快到了，你是不是又要从“千手不雅音”酿成“维纳斯”了呢？那老外有“双十一”或是类似的血拼购物狂欢节吗？让我们一路来听今天的老外说吧！

Do you know anything about Double Eleven in China? It’s approaching, on Sunday.

I heard something about a sale on that day.

Gwen

Yes, everything is on sale on Taobao. When you were in UK, when you wanted to buy something, would you usually buy it online, or in shopping malls or stores?

Normally online, just because work commitments*.

*commitment

“许诺，责任，义务”

a commitment is something which regularly takes up some of your time because of an agreement you have made or because of responsibilities that you have

所以work commitments能够理解成，被工做所迫，弦外之音，他工做很忙。

What do you use to buy? Amazon or ebay?

Amazon definitely, ebay occasionally. If I was looking for something strange then I would probably look on eBay. But Amazon would probably be ... Over 90% of my purchases, I would expect. People still go to the shopping malls at the weekend, the girls more than the guys. The shopping mall are still full at the weekends. But a lot of people just go and look. Then they see something they like, they would order online anyway because it’s generally a little bit cheaper.

It’s quite the same here in China. Do you have a Double Eleven? That... on this particular day or in this week, everything online would be much much cheaper.

The only kind of equivalents we have would be the Boxing Day* That would normally last about a week, sometimes two weeks. It’s on the 26th of December. America has Black Friday**. I have no idea what that is actually.

黑色礼拜五。美国圣诞节大采购一般是从感恩节之后起头的。感恩节是每年11月的第四个木曜日。因而它的第二天，也就是美国人大采购的之一天。在那一天，美国的商场城市推出大量的打折和优惠活动，以在岁尾停止最初一次大规模的促销。因为美国的商场一般以红条记录赤字，以黑条记录盈利，而感恩节后的那个礼拜五人们疯狂的抢购使得商场利润大增，因而被商家们称做黑色礼拜五。商家期望通过以那一天起头的圣诞大采购为那一年获得最多的盈利。

那两个节日的起源说法纷歧，感兴趣的同窗能够本身搜刮一下。

How did the 11.11 thing come around in China? What does it celebrate？

Gwen

Oh, it’s quite funny. Because 11.11, that’s for singletons(独身须眉或女子), for single people. It’s four ones in figures. On this particular day, the singletons would feel lonely, sad and depressed because they are single. So Jack Ma, I think, thought of an idea to kind of comfort the singletons. On this particular day everything will be cheaper and let’s celebrate instead of moaning(埋怨) around. He started it, and now it’s not only in Alibaba, it’s everywhere. It’s even in shopping malls. It’s not only for singletons anymore. Everybody would buy at least SOMETHING on this day because it’s much cheaper.

It only lasts one day, doesn’t it?

Not really. One week, I guess. But some products, only for several hours on that particular day. So what do you buy on Boxing Day as everything is much cheaper?

Generally clothing*. Or if there is any family that I hadn’t seen on Christmas Day, I hadn’t bought their Christmas presents, I would go and buy that because it would be much cheaper as well.

clothes 是复数形式，没有单数形式。统指衣服，不指一件衣服。能够说many clothes, these clothes 和those clothes。但不成说three clothes 等。如今很少说much clothes。

clothes 和 clothing 都统指衣服，但 clothing 是单数形式，没有复数形式。留意 a suit of clothes（一套衣服，包罗上衣、背心和裤子）不成改做 a suit of clothing, an article of clothing（一件衣服）不成改做 an article of clothes。

People do still queue up*outside some of the shopping malls for hours before the shops' open time, see what clothes are going on sale. Even the main supermarkets with all the electrical goods and things like that. So it’s quite a large range of products I suppose.

Talking about delivery system, if you order something from Amazon, how long would it take to get the product?

It depends, if you’ve got Amazon Prime(亚马逊会员), if you pay a premium(额外费用，那里指会员费) , you can sometimes get next-day delivery on quite a lot of products for free. You pay a monthly £10 pounds, you’d get next-day delivery free on quite a lot of products actually. Not every product was covered on it. But a lot of things would just arrive the next day. Some city centers used to have Amazon delivery place. So if you’re at work, you just popping*to the (delivery place). Where I used to work in London, there was a mall about 200 meters away. There it has a row of lockers(有锁的寄物柜). You get a code when your Amazon delivery arrives. You just get to the locker, type in the code and your parcel (包裹) is waiting for you. Or you get to leave it to work, anywhere, work, home, anywhere.

And if you’re not an Amazon Prime?

You could still have the option for 24 hours if they’ve offered it on that product. You’ll just have to pay extra for the speedy service, maybe 5 to 6 pounds extra for it.

But you can choose, it gives you a whole range of delivery options when you make the purchase, 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days, something like that.

But what would it normally take, apart from paying extra or being an Amazon Prime?

A week would be normal.

Gwen

That is quite different here in China. We don’t have that Prime service or we don’t usually pay extra or anything. But it's quite the same that if we order something online from Taobao, it usually would take 3-5 days the most, even though you’re living quite far from that product.
